This morning, I awakened in the quiet and made myself some coffee and a breakfast of fruit (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries and a cut up banana). I began my day with beauty: poetry and looking at the work of one of my favorite artists, Vincent Van Gogh. I came across this quote from one of his letters, “…I have nature and art and poetry, and if that is not enough, what is enough?”
What is enough?
That question resonated deeply within me.
What is enough?
A question that I ask myself in a culture based in rampant consumerism. In a culture where the wealthy have a vile and incessant need for more in their greed. They are constantly trying to accumulate more wealth, more power, more expensive toys to the destruction of all else. It’s a self-centered clamoring and filled with arrogance. Even Van Gogh’s art, like all art, has become about ownership and purchase. It is seen not for its spiritual beauty but as a prize to be won because of its market value. Everything has become commodified.
Be more by having more.
Yet I find myself in resistance and rebellion. I am questioning my own motivations and values. What is enough for me?
