Earlier this week, I took my class outside to recess. It was the first day where it both hadn’t rained and the ground wasn’t wet. Still, there were some lingering dark clouds in the sky. I have one little boy who is in my first grade class who was also in my kindergarten class last year. He is filled with anxieties. One of his biggest has been storms.
He looked up, saw the few ominous clouds amidst the otherwise bright, sunny day and began to get worried. To add to his fears, while we were outside, there was a fire drill and the alarm was loud. This caused him to have a meltdown.
Once I got my class to where they are supposed to lineup outside when there’s a fire drill, I knelt down to talk to the little boy whose body was shaking and tears were streaming down his cheeks. He had his hands over his ears, but he could still hear me.
