What a perfect essay to awake to on this Easter morning, when I'm bound to my bed because of a recent ankle surgery. I long to be outside in the wild air, and your words took me there.

My earthy sense of being was forged from childhood moments spent at my grandparent's farm in Northern Michigan.

I come alive when the breeze greets my face, the sun warms my shoulders, the clouds extend an invitation to lie on my back in the grass and gaze at them rolling by.

There's no better place to be.

Happy Easter.

I am so glad that you liked it. Sorry to hear about your ankle surgery but hope that you heal soon.

It is the paragraph about feeling sadness at the discontent that touched me most.

I'd like to share a paragraph you've written here in a nature journaling class I'm leading. Would that be ok? I don't see your name here to give you credit, but will credit your substack name unless you'd prefer otherwise. Truly beautiful essay.

Feel free to do so. You can credit my sub stack and use my name if you want. It's Elliott Blackwell. A nature journaling class sounds wonderful.

just stunning. I love the way you bring us along and remind us to pay attention to this one beautiful life. paying attention to the rhythms of the world is how we connect to the life we are actually living.

For over a month now, I’ve incorporated a Mary Oliver poem to my cultivating time each morning. That first thing in the morning time to center my thoughts, still my mind, speak to God, hear from God, and purge the awakening thoughts of my mind into writing is my cultivating time. Poetry has helped me to remain in that slow, contemplative state of mind as I greet the rush of the day.
